Miscellaneous Technical Notes
Most of these come from email I sent to someone or other, explaining something they asked about. Long, educational answers are probably good reading for other people as well, so I've been collecting them here. Sooner or later, I will try and organize some or all of this into structured documents.- HTTP Authentication (aka htaccess)
- Proxy ARP - Here I attempted to explain the way Proxy ARP is over-used by terminal servers.
- Image Size Attributes in HTML Documents - I had a customer whining about how some page seemed to be "hanging" under Netscape but not MSIE. This is an explanation about how the two browsers differ in the way they render pages with incomplete information.
- Setting up a Temporary Slave Server for a Move - I had a customer that was physically moving the servers in their data center to another city. One issue was coordinating the address change with the InterNIC of his DNS servers. This email described the high level bullet points necessary to set up a slave server to answer requests on the new IP address.
- Landscape Printing with SCO - Someone asked me how to get a print job to print in landscape from SCO Unix.
- What NIC Handles Are - A customer wanted to change my NIC handle (when they should have assigned a different person's NIC handle to their domain). This contains an explanation of NIC handles.
- Is our website behind a firewall?
- Unix Filesystems - A brief and concise introduction to filesystems under Unix.
- mbox Mailboxes - A brief introduction to the mbox mailbox format, and several things relating to it.
- Unix inodes - A description of inodes (an important filesystem data structure) and ways to make use of them.
